D205 Launches Acceleration Time

This school year Elmhurst D205 has implemented dedicated time for interventions and enrichment in all of its elementary and middle schools.  The District is calling this Acceleration Time to reflect its mission of accelerating learning for all students.  Acceleration Time is a major component of the District's new middle school schedule.

D205 follows the Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) model of school improvement in which teachers collaborate on each students' learning needs by focusing on the following four questions:  1)  What do we want our students to learn? 2) How will we know if each student has learned it? 3) How will we respond when some students do not learn? 4) How can we extend and enrich learning for students who have demonstrated proficiency?

Acceleration Time addresses questions three and four.

Promoting Innovation through Creativity

The District 205 vision is All Students Graduate College, Career and Life Ready.  To support that concept, the District has determined that the 6Cs of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, character and citizenship must be essential components of its instructional practices if this vision is to be fully realized.  
Previously, the District referenced the 4Cs, but as our team learned together and studied the work of Dr. Michael Fullan and Dr. Bill Daggett, it became apparent that in order to ensure life readiness in addition to college and career readiness, the 4Cs needed to be expanded to include character and citizenship. 
In my September 4 blog on innovation, I shared with readers that at our D205 August Administrator Retreat, the senior leadership team created a word cloud in which creativity emerged as the key concept that drives innovation.
