85% of Elmhurst Residents Satisfied with D205

At the November 14 Board of Education meeting, Strategies 360, a nation-wide communications firm, presented the findings of a recent scientific telephone poll of 301 D205 residents.  The poll has a margin of error of +/- 5.7 percentage points.

The poll found that 85% of respondents were very satisfied or satisfied with the quality of education children receive, with 50% very satisfied.  Consultants pointed out that this is significantly higher than results in other districts.

There were questions on a variety of topics, including instruction, operations, finances and facilities.  The poll is part of Phase II of the Focus 205 process, an extensive two-plus year effort to elicit community input and feedback as part of the District's work to develop an Operational Plan.

What Is a Makerspace?

A makerspace is a collaborative work space that is designed to encourage an entrepreneurial mindset of creativity.  These spaces support STEM activities and future ready skills (creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication).  They embody problem-based learning approaches including, but not limited to, formal workstations such as 3D printers and CNC machines or simple supplies such as legos or other odds and ends, including plastic bottles or used cereal boxes.

Makerspace facilities are found in schools and libraries and frequently in stand alone facilities in tech corridors or progressive towns and cities.  In those makerspaces, it is not uncommon for ideas to be patented or that activities lead to small business start-ups. Specific activities could include coding or electronics.  In schools they are often designed to be enrichment activities that support grade level curriculum and learning standards.
